Vigilant effort helps hospice

TWO Royal Navy officers kept their sea legs active for a South Tyneside charity on board a submarine.
St Clare's Hospice in Jarrow has received a generous donation from the crew of HMS Vigilant.

Commanding Officer Paul Dunn and Warrant Officer Mark Duffy raised £1,750 for the hospice.

Crew members, friends and family all sponsored the pair, who walked the equivalent of Land's End to John o'Groats on a treadmill aboard the Vigilant.

WO Duffy wanted to take part in a sponsored walk held by St Clare's but was on active service at the time.

The money raised will go towards the running costs of the hospice in Primrose Terrace, which includes patient care and medication.

St Clare's fundraising manager Marie Watson said: "This money makes a lot of difference. Our running costs each year are £1.1m.

"And £600,000 needs to come from fundraising and our shops. This boost is lovely."

St Clare's Hospice offers care for people with life-threatening illnesses such as cancer.

HMS Vigilant (S30) is the third Vanguard class submarine of the Royal Navy and carries the Trident ballistic missile, the UK's nuclear deterrent.
