St. Clare’s has an excellent reputation for providing specialist palliative care to patients with life limiting illnesses and has an ambitious strategy for developing the range and scale of the services we provide to the population of South Tyneside.  The Hospice In-Patient unit has 8 beds which includes a dedicated respite bed. The Day Care Unit has a facility to cater for up to 20 patients per day x5 days per a week. 

We have positions available on our Staff Nurse flexi bank. Hospice/palliative/oncology care experience would be preferred, however not essential.  You will need to have post registration experience, qualified to Diploma level, possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills and have a genuine interest in palliative care and the future developments of the Hospice. The successful candidates will be required to work day and night duties as well as Day Care, when required.

The posts are subject to an enhanced DBS check.

Hospice Physician – Fixed Term (12 months) – Part Time

Are you an experienced Hospice Physician or interested in Palliative Care Medicine?

If so we’d love to hear from you. St Clare’s Hospice is an independent provider of Specialist Palliative Care situated in Jarrow, Tyne and Wear. Our Hospice forms part of an experienced and enthusiastic Palliative Care network working between Hospice, Hospital and Community under the leadership of two Palliative Care Consultants employed by South Tyneside NHS Foundation Trust.

The Hospice has an 8-bedded In-Patient Unit and a 15-space Day Care facility. Out-Patient provision includes a Consultant clinic as well as Lymphoedema and Physiotherapy. A bereavement counselling service and complementary therapies are also based at the Hospice.

We are hoping to appoint two part-time Hospice Physicians to cover 8 clinical sessions in total. Part-time and locum applications will be considered and the number of sessions for each post is negotiable. This post would suit both GP’s wanting to gain more Palliative Care experience and Doctors wishing to pursue a career in Palliative Medicine.

The successful applicant(s) would work alongside the existing, experienced medical team of Hospice Physicians and visiting Consultants at St Clare’s Hospice for the provision of a full assessment and Palliative Care service to in-patients and day care guests as well as linking with the extended multi-disciplinary team. In addition, he or she would be part of the non-resident 1:5 first on-call rota for the Hospice (upon completion of an induction period).

Excellent communication and holistic assessment skills are essential. Experience in Palliative Medicine and a Diploma in the specialty are desirable, but not essential. A training and educational support package will be made available to the right candidate.

Full GMC registration and significant postgraduate experience is required. 

The salary for this post will be dependent on experience and the number of hours preferred.

Volunteer Receptionist


We currently have some vacancies for experienced volunteer receptionists to join our very friendly team.

The purpose of the role is to provide a polite friendly and efficient reception service to all visitors and staff of St Clare’s Hospice.


Monday – Friday 5.00pm – 8.00pm

Saturday & Sunday 9.30am – 12.30pm, 1.30pm – 5.00pm, 5.00pm – 8.00pm

Main Tasks  

  • Dealing with patients, visitors and staff either by telephone or in person in a friendly, efficient and courteous manner.
  • To pass on any messages to the relevant person in an efficient and professional manner. 
  • To maintain the Hospice shop and operate the till. 
  • To ensure that all visitors and staff sign in and out at reception
  • Accept responsibility for locking the confectionery, card, drinks and key cupboard at the end of the shift.  Also to ensure that the main switchboard telephone is transferred to the nurse’s station, till is locked and front doors are locked if no one is taking over your shift and return master keys to the nurses’ station.
  • Handling monetary donations and writing appropriate receipt.

Personal Qualities

  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Friendly and Polite.
  • Able to work independently.  

Essential Training Requirements

  • Switchboard.
  • Till Operation.
  • General Reception Duties.

Driver Escort


St. Clare Hospice has an excellent reputation for providing palliative care for patients suffering from a life limiting illness and is keen to build on this by offering an extended range and scale of the services to the population it serves south of the Tyne.

We are currently looking for a friendly, caring and patient volunteer driver escort to assist our transport driver in transferring our guests to and from the hospice.

The main role will be to ensure that the day guests can safely transfer on and off the ambulance and to observe the day guests while on the ambulance in case of sudden illness and to ensure all guests have their seatbelts fastened. 

The hours will be 8.30am – 10.30am and 2.30pm – 4.30pm

First Aid training is desirable but not essential.

The post is subject to an enhanced DBS Disclosure.
