In celebration of 30 years of hospice care in South Tyneside for St Clare's Hospice, we held a special 30th Birthday Raffle.

The raffle was drawn on Monday 26th March and raised over £5,000 for the Hospice.

The winning raffle ticket numbers were:

1st Prize - ticket no. 1617

2nd Prize - ticket no. 16255

3rd Prize - ticket no. 8832

A huge congratulations to our lucky winners and a big thank you to everyone who bought tickets in support of St Clare's Hospice. Your support enables us to continue providing care and support to people with life-limiting illnesses in South Tyneside.

Ann White, from South Shields, was our 1st Prize winner. Ann was delighted to get a phone call from the Hospice telling her she’d won the first prize - £2,500! She tells us:

“It feels real now that I’ve got the cheque, but at first I thought this must be a prank! My daughter Joanne volunteered in St Clare’s Day Care for over a year and loved it; now she works as a volunteer counsellor for the Hospice.

My husband died of cancer in 2008. He died at home, which is what he wanted, but I support the Hospice because I know they’re helping someone else. I have supported St Clare’s for many years, completing four zip slides and an abseil to raise money for the Hospice. People say ‘you must have been frightened doing that’ and I say ‘yes I was, but people who have cancer are always frightened and although the abseil was frightening, it was only a few minutes and it was over’.

I often go in to the Hospice’s charity shops in South Shields and I will pop some money in a collection tin when I see one but that isn’t regular, so I wanted to take part in the raffle. The U3A group I am part of had chosen St Clare’s Hospice as their Charity of the Year and I bought the tickets when the Hospice came to collect the cheque from our fundraising. I bought £5 worth of tickets and ended up winning – I couldn’t believe it!

I’ve donated £100 to the Hospice today from my winnings and will use the rest to redecorate my bedroom, visit family and have a nice holiday.”

Huge congratulations to Ann on winning the top prize in our Birthday Raffle. We’d like to thank her and her family for their continued support of the Hospice.

Muriel Cassidy, Manager of our Frederick Street shop, won 2nd Prize in the Birthday Raffle, which was an iPad.  Muriel tells us:

“Our volunteers have been selling the raffle tickets to customers in the Fredrick Street shop and I decided to buy a book to boost the money raised.  I always like to take part in things for charity and I think it means more when it comes from the heart.

“I was shocked when I got the phone call, I didn’t expect to win but it was a nice surprise. I have an iPad but it’s quite old and I was thinking of buying a new one before Christmas… I didn’t but I think it’s because I was supposed to win this one!”

Kathy Dudley, from East Boldon, was the winner of our 3rd Prize. Kathy won a Barbour Wax Jacket, which was kindly donated by Barbour. Kathy tells us:

“It was a lovely surprise to hear I’d won. You always think you’ll just buy the raffle tickets in support of the charity as a little donation, I never thought I was going to win! It was definitely a lovely bonus to hear I’d won third prize.”
