Angela Burness's mam, Susan, was cared for in our In-Patient Unit at St Clare's Hospice earlier this year. Angela tells us why St Clare’s Hospice means so much to her and why she’s supporting us this Christmas:
"St Clare’s Hospice - to be very honest, those very words always scared me for years and years. That was until March 2018, when my mam, my only ever, best friend, was asked if she would like to be admitted there from the hospital ward in South Tyneside District Hospital, after discovering she had terminal cancer of the bowel. We discussed this as a family and all agreed this would be her best option, as they specialised more for her needs.
This was the BEST decision we could have ever made! What a difference St Clare’s was for her. From the moment she arrived there, the staff were absolutely incredible. They literally could not do enough. She had her own large, beautiful room with patio doors to the garden, it was very private, and quite simply very beautiful.
My mam praised those girls, they really were like angels, she was treated with such dignity and compassion by every one of them, they were just so lovely and so kind. They welcomed us all like family, even our little shih tzu doggy, Bo, who amazingly was allowed to visit her too.
Sadly, on April 15th 2018 my mam had to leave us all, my beautiful little angel went to heaven. I know this is probably such a strange thing to be saying, but I do feel I have such a real sense of love and a bond with St Clare’s whenever I still enter that building now.
I can honestly say that I feel privileged that my mam was given that chance to spend her time at St Clare’s. They are a fantastic Hospice with such a devoted and compassionate team behind them.
I highly recommend them, and they truly deserve every bit of help and support they can get, they really are so desperately needed by us all. I can’t thank them enough.

This Christmas we’re asking our local community to support us. If you would like to make a donation, however big or small, you can help us to provide care and support to families like Angela’s when they need us most.
